Sorry guys, I'll post the new review tomarrow. So yeah, I guess this ends the update...so talk to you tomarrow. *wonders what the point of making this update was*

Monday, June 28, 2004 0:47 AM

Hey everyone, today's review is going to be a little late, but I'll have it up either later today or tomarrow. The reason I'm delaying the review is because I have some news to report, and I want to let you guys know about it. Have any of you been watching "Case Closed" on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block? If the answer is no then SHAME ON YOU!!!! "Case Closed" is one of the best new shows to hit TV in a LONG time, and you should be watching it now! However I'm not here to promote the TV show (or am I?), I'm here to let you know that this show was originally titled "Detective Conan," and some of the names were changed to fit the American TV airwaves better. This was not a big deal since out of the whole dub, the names don't really harm the story, and the dub turned out to be excellent. VIZ LLC picked up the rights to release the manga here in the USA, under the real title of "Detective Conan" and using the Japanese names. That has changed. Acording to this message board post, VIZ will be changing the manga to "Case Closed" and the names in the manga will be altered. Many fans are quite frankly pissed at this situation, and many people are going to be sending REAL LETTERS (not e-mail) to VIZ to let them know about how much they hate these changes! So here's your chance to make your voice heard.

Viz Llc
655 Bryant Street
San Francisco, CA 94107
(415) 546-7073

The above is the address for VIZ LLC. Send them a POLITE letter and express that you are not happy with the changes, that you will think twice about buying their future products because of this, and even threaten not to buy the series if you must! I'm not saying whether I agree with what VIZ is doing or not, but I feel the fans have the right to know about this. Also if anyone over at VIZ wants to tell their side of the story in an interview or something just give me a buzz and I'll set something up (no tricks, honest). Now to get back to finishing up that review...

Well here's some interesting news:

DC ANNOUNCES CMX

DC Comics has officially confirmed its forthcoming manga line, CMX, which will launch in October. Launch titles for the imprint will include the initial volumes of Madara , art by Tajima Sho-u (who created the character designs for the anime sequences in Kill Bill: Volume 1 ) and written by Otsuka Eiji from Kadokawa; Mekakushi no Kuni , illustrated and written by Tsukuba Sakura from Hakusensha; and Eroika Yori Ai Wo , illustrated and written by Aoike Yasuko from Akita Shoten.

"There's tremendous enthusiasm for manga in the States," said DC Publisher and President Paul Levitz in a press release. "New readers, particularly girls and women, have rushed to embrace new talent from abroad, which we're excited to bring to American audiences as part of DC Comics' commitment to publishing diverse and exciting works from around the world. "

Upcoming CMX titles will include Fujii Mihona' s Gals (the inspiration for the anime series SuperGals! from Shueisha), Tenjo Tange , by Oh! Great from Shueisha; 9 Banme no Musashi , by Takahashi Miyuki from Akita Shoten; Swan , by Ariyoshi Kyoko from Akita Shoten; Monster Collection by Sei Ito from Kadokawa Shoten; Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne , by Tanemura Arina from Shueisha; and Akuma De Soro by Takanashi Mitsuba from Shueisha.

According to DC, each of the CMX titles are Japanese manga, which are being released for the first time in the United States, and will be published in the traditional manga format - sized at 5 x 7 3/8 ", with black and white interiors. Subsequent volumes of each series will be released on a quarterly schedule.

"We believe that manga readership is going to continue its rapid growth and also evolve in the US," said John Nee, Vice President of Business Development at DC Comics in the same release. "CMX is committed to publishing all genre of manga including horror, fantasy, science fiction and adventure titles and the line will be as diverse, and as author friendly, as that of DC Comics, Vertigo, and WildStorm."

Nee also announced today that DC Comics has hired Jake Tarbox as the Group Editor of the CMX imprint. Tarbox has spent the last 14 years living in Tokyo, Japan where he worked at Coamix, Inc. as the International Affairs Manager and Vice-Editor-Chief of Raijin Comics, administered the creation of the American subsidiary company Gutsoon! Entertainment, and edited the manga magazine, RAIJIN COMICS. Tarbox will handle the editorial responsibilities for the CMX imprint including overseeing the translation and printing of manga titles into English.

From DC's release :

ABOUT THE LEAD TITLES AND TALENT:

MADARA Volume 1 (originally serialized in MARUKATSU FAMICOM magazine) represents the first work done together by the creators of the hit series MPD Psycho, artist Tajima Sho-u (who created the character designs for the anime sequences in the movie " Kill Bill " ) and writer Otsuka Eiji. When his village is attacked by demons, Madara, a blacksmith ' s apprentice, discovers that he possesses fantastic powers.

Artist Tajima Sho-u debuted as a manga artist in 1987 with the publication of Madara. He has worked on illustration and character design for computer games (including Galerians) and animation. He has illustrated MPD Psycho, Brothers Baby Baby, Madara Colors, and his current hit series Gorilla Kick.

In addition to his work with manga, writer Otsuka Eiji is a critic, essayist, and author of several successful non-fiction books on Japanese popular and " otaku " sub-cultures. In the 80s, Otsuka was editor-in-chief of MANGA BURIKKO, a leading women ' s manga magazine where he pioneered research on the " otaku " sub-culture in modern Japan.

Mekakushi no Kuni Volume 1 was originally serialized in LaLa DX magazine from 1998 to 2004. In this nine volume series, creator Tsukuba Sakura tells the story of Otsuka Kanade, a high school girl who can see visions of the future. Should she act to change their fate, or sit back and wait for events to unfold?

A rising young author in the shojo manga world, Tsukuba Sakura decided to become a manga artist in high school. As she was about to graduate college, she furiously distributed her work to publishers. Her first published work was A Bright Spring Day, in LaLa magazine. She has also written and drawn Invisible World: a Dog ' s Story (published in LaLa magazine) and Past Day Present (published in LaLa magazine).

Eroika yori Ai wo Komete Volume 1 was originally serialized in PRINCESS magazine from 1977 to the present. Eroika yori Ai wo Komete follows the adventures of a British aristocrat and international art thief who taunts his nemesis, Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach, by leaving notes behind at the scene of his crimes, signed " From Eroica with Love. "

Aoike Yasuko ' s first manga, Sayonara Nanette, was published in RIBBON magazine when she was fifteen years old. Afterwards, she garnered attention by publishing several hit stories in rapid succession, including Shojo Blend, When Roses Cry, Oh Carol, " I love you, Tetsu-sensei, " and " Hey, Young Guy. " In 1976 her sci-fi comedy Sons of Eve in PRINCESS magazine, represented a switch from pure shojo stories to a new kind of storytelling.

Debuting in 1977, Eroika yori Ai wo Komete became a huge best seller, and its sequel series is still being serialized today. The series is built on a great deal of research about European art history, and has helped to popularize many European painters in Japan as well as Japanese tours of European art museums.

Aoike Yasuko has continued a long and productive career in the pages of PRINCESS, a highly popular girl ' s manga anthology magazine. But her work is so popular that she is at present concurrently publishing stories in several magazines. She is the creator of Miriam Blue's Lake, Sons of Eve, Seven Seas, Seven Skies, The Castle, Ivy Navy, Trafalgar, Z, Der Freischutz, Alcasar, The Tale of a Priest and a Doctor, The Day of Saladin, Richard, the Lion-Hearted, Brother Falco, The Temptation of Scarlet, The Carthaginian Fantasy, The Melancholy of Her Majesty, The Knight of Drachen, and Plus Ultra.

Well folks, I've got your new review today, and it is for none other then "Garfield: The Movie!" And for those of you interested, I'm selling some of my old Garfield tapes on eBay. There's only a few hours left so get them while you can! Also if there is anyone reading this that is not watching "Case Closed" on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block you REALLY need to get on your lazy butt on watch it! This is one of the best anime's I've ever seen, and that's saying something since its (sadly) been a LONG time since I've seen a truly good anime that I thought was classic material! Since I'll be going on vacation in early July I'm thinking of going to a "three reviews a week" schedual since I most likely won't be updating the site while I'm on vacation. So get ready, because I'm going to be uploading as many reviews as I can in the next couple of weeks.

Monday, June 21, 2004 0:30 AM

Because I've had a VERY busy weekend, I have decided that I will post the new review on Wensday instead of today! Instead I have updated my review of "CLAMP School Detectives." Also for someone who runs a comic book website I feel that I have done a VERY poor job of reminding everyone of the upcoming Free Comic Book Day, so I will retify that mistake now:

NATIONAL FREE COMIC BOOK DAY BONUS!
MEET COMIC BOOK WRITER  GEOFF JOHNS   SATURDAY, July 3rd @ 1pm

One of the most popular writers in comics today, Geoff Johns is the man behind such comic book hits as the JSA, AVENGERS, TEEN TITANS and the FLASH; join Metro Entertainment on July 3rd at 1pm for his first FREE autograph signing in Santa Barbara!  Just days after the release of SPIDER-MAN 2 and coinciding with National FREE COMIC DAY, this is an event not to be missed!

**FREE AUTOGRAPHS** Contact Metro for more information!

Metro Entertainment
6 W. Anapamu St.
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 963-2168 www.metroautographs.com
metrocomix@aol.com

So there you have it. I'll keep reminding you guys of Free Comic Book Day so that you won't forget, but please also remember to bring your friends along with you. Why? So that they can get their free comic books of course! After all, the point of Free Comic Book Day is to try and gain new fans of comic books, not to reward old fans for keeping the business alive (although there's nothing wrong with that *wink at comic book companies*). So remember to bring your friends. Come back Wensday for the new review. Oh yeah, and don't forget to check out my eBay auctions. And on a final note some more manga news:

Del Rey Announces New Kodansha Acquisitions

(New York, June 15, 2004)-Del Rey Books, an imprint of The Random House Publishing Group, announced two new major Kodansha manga acquisitions today, both geared for release in October of 2004. The Wallflower and Othello are among the most popular titles published by Kodansha in Japan. Both are shojo (geared toward girls) manga, although they will appeal equally to females and males in the U.S.

The Wallflower (Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge) by Tomoko Hayakawa tells the story of four handsome boys who have been given the chance to get free rent, but only on one condition: They must transform the landlady's niece into a proper lady! Enter Sunako Nakahara, the agoraphobic, horror-movie-loving, pockmark-faced, frizzy-haired, fashion-illiterate hermit who has a tendency to break into explosive nose bleeds whenever she sees anything attractive. This project is going to take far more than our four heroes ever expected; it needs a miracle!

Othello, by Kodansha Manga of the Year award winner Satomi Ikezawa, stars Yaya, the nicest girl in high school-and everyone's favorite doormat. No one treats her well, but Yaya is just too shy and trusting to believe the worst of her friends. When it all gets to be too much, Yaya goes away... and a new personality, Nana, emerges! Nana is ready to show Yaya's false friends for the slime they are, and to kick some serious butt in the process. But can Yaya understand what's happening to her mind?

"Othello and The Wallflower represent a great next step from our manga launch in May," said Del Rey's Director of Manga Dallas Middaugh. "Readers have praised our translation work and extra materials, and we intend to bring the same level of quality to these works. Both represent some of the finest shojo coming out of Japan today, and I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I have!"

These new titles round out the recently launched Del Rey manga program, which includes Tsubasa, xxxHOLiC, Gundam Seed and Negima! The titles launched in May 2004 and scored the top two and four out of the top twelve slots on the Nielsen Bookscan graphic novel bestseller list for the week of their debut.

Believe it or not, I almost didn't get the review done today, and was even considering posting it tomarrow. But then I realized that people only visit my site on Monday's, Friday's, and Wensday's (for the times when I post my extra reviews). So I forced myself to get the review of "MARS" done today for your reading pleasure. Also I recently started re-reading "Kodocha: Sana's Stage" today, and I swear this series gets better every time I read it. It is truly one of the greatest comics ever writen! This was the only series on this site to get the honored A+ grade ("Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" is not its own series), and if you have not checked this series out then you REALLY need to! Okay folks, I'm going back to bed. See you on Monday. And don't forget to see "Garfield: The Movie."

Monday, June 14, 2004 0:32 AM

Today I have posted the review for "Knights of The Zodiac." Also I have posted more items for sale on eBay here. Check it out.

Friday, June 11, 2004 1:19 AM

Well folks, I got extremely lazy this and didn't write a new review, so I have instead posted the review for "Conifdential Confessions Vol. 2," which I completed a month ago but have only posted today. Also "Hikaru no Go Vol. 1" is now in book stores everywhere. You can read the review here. And don't forget to go see "Garfield The Movie" today, which I will probably be reviewing sometime next week!

Thursday, June 10, 2004 1:09 PM

For those of you who are interested, I am selling some more of my manga collection, and these auctions are starting off at the low price of $0.99 a piece. Now tell me you can't go wrong with that? Check out the auctions here. See you tomarrow with a new review!

Monday, June 7, 2004 0:54 AM

For your viewing pleasure I have posted my review for "Batman: Child of Dreams." Keep in mind that this review has been sitting on my hard drive for months now, so if the writting style mimmicks some of my first reviews (AKA, VERY poorly written) then forgive me. Also keep in mind that "Garfield The Movie" opens on Friday (hugs Garfield plush). Anyway, see you guys on Friday.

Friday, June 4, 2004 0:17 AM

I have posted a new review for "Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails" in the reviews section. Also I have changed the logo ever so slightly to reflect upon the "revised" name of the site (the revised name is easier to remember and stands out more). I would also like to point out there is a new comic book movie coming out next week. No, it's not "Spider-Man 2" (although that does look excellent), it's "Garfield: The Movie!" Personally Garfield is one of my favorite comic strip characters out there, and I'm looking forward to seeing this movie (even if it does look terrible). I'll have a review of the movie shortly after I see it, but until then see you guys Monday with a new review!
