Well darn, it looks like Anime on DVD beat me to this news an hour earlier. Nevermind, I guess this story isn't too exclusive after all. But at least there was an update today.

Thursday, September 30, 2004 12:31 PM

You may have heard from Anime News Network that there will be a new manga company that is going to be opening up on October 25th of this year. That is what everyone else has said, but I've secured an exclusive copy of the press release that you won't find on any other site (well, not yet anyway):

SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT SETS SAIL IN LOS ANGELES

(Los Angeles, September 30, 2004) - Dallas Middaugh and Jason DeAngelis today announced the formation of Seven Seas Entertainment, a new Los Angeles-based publishing house dedicated to producing original manga for the international market. Manga remains at the forefront of an explosive rise in graphic novel sales in American bookstores, and Seven Seas is the first U.S. company solely dedicated to publishing authentic original manga in the Japanese style.

In February 2005, Seven Seas will launch four ongoing graphic novel series. The company will debut these titles to the industry at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 5. A sneak peek of the publisher's work is available at the company's web site, www.gomanga.com , and full details about the four flagship titles will be made available to the public on October 25.

"This is the beginning of a fun ride," remarked CEO Dallas Middaugh.
"Working with Jason has opened my eyes to some incredible artists who I honestly believe are destined to take manga to the next level in America, and to expand the market for original manga throughout the world." No stranger to manga publishing, Middaugh has worked as the director of sales and marketing for Viz and currently consults with Del Rey Books as their Director of Manga, a relationship that will continue for the foreseeable future.

"It's thrilling to work with such talented artists and writers," said Seven Seas' President, Jason DeAngelis. "Creating original manga is a dream come true, and I'm confident that our work is on par with content coming out of Japan." DeAngelis is also experienced in the manga field, having translated such prominent manga titles as Berserk and Gundam Seed for Dark Horse and Del Rey, respectively. He is an expert on Japanese culture, having lived in Japan for six years, and has attended the UCLA Professional Screenwriting Program.

Seven Seas is dedicated to producing high quality original manga with strong stories and dynamic artwork. While Japan is rightfully acknowledged as the birthplace of manga, the company believes it is an art form that can span all cultures. Seven Seas seeks to promote the concept of "world manga" by collaborating with talented international writers and artists to develop stories with a universal appeal for a worldwide audience.

Exciting no? I don't normally post news like this, but this was just too big to sit on. And what a convieniant time for this news to come out, just when I finished interviewing Dallas a few days ago (which is something you manga fans might want to check out if you haven't already)! I would also like to mention that I am going to be requiring some of your guy's voices when it comes to a couple of special features I'm working on. Which is why I suggest you sign up for the message board so that you can join in on the fun. I've already posted one post requiring your guy's help, and I'll have more threads which will require your assistance too. Despite this rather long update, I (sadly) have no review for you today. Well ok that's somewhat of a lie. I do have a few reviews written, but I always like to have reviews written two weeks in advance, this way there is never a lack of updates for this site. If I find time to finish my two unfinished reviews tonight then there will be a new review TOMARROW, but no promises! See you guys later!

Today on this special Saturday update I have added a couple new things. One is that I've posted my short but critical review of "Priest," two is that I've posted an exclusive interview with Dallas Middaugh from Del Rey, and finally I've added a message board to my site. I don't particularly care for message boards, but I know that lots of people like them, and I figure that having one may actually give everyone a reason to check back on my site more then once a day. Since this is such a big update today, the next new update will be on October 4th (next Monday), so enjoy this new stuff until then. So see you guys later, enjoy the new message board.

I'd tell you what review I posted today is, but I think I already told what today's new review is on the last update, so I'll just say that a new review is up. Now I have a question for everyone here: How many visiters are fans of the hit Adult Swim show "Inu-Yasha?" If you do, then this update may be for you. I like the "Inu-Yasha" TV show. I don't love it, I like it. I've seen almost every episode of this show, most of the episodes I've seen dubbed, which is strange to hear from me since I like to watch practically all my anime subtitled, but "Inu-Yasha" is on TV for FREE, so I stomach it! A couple nights ago I noticed that the last two episodes of the show had been fansubbed, and that I could easily download them and see how the show ends without having to wait five or six years down the road to see the ending. Well, I cracked and downloaded the episodes. People, if you are a fan of the TV show, then I would HIGHLY recomend you stop watching the show now, as there is absolutly no real ending for the show! The show "ends" with Naraku escaping, Sango's brother still missing, the Shikon Jewal is still in pieces, Kouga is still running around the world, Inu-Yasha's brother is still doing whatever it is he's doing, Kikyo still walks around the world without a purpose, and the final shot of the show is of Inu-Yasha and his friends running off into the sunset to find and defeat Naraku. Piece of crap "ending," makes me wonder what the point of investing your time into 167 half hour episodes of a show that doesn't even have a sold conclusion. Never before has an ending made me so mad, and this from a guy who had his stomach turned when he got to the ending of "The Good Son." At the moment the first season box set of "Inu-Yasha" has been released, and I bought it because it was a good deal ($61.95 for 27 episodes, which for anime in general is a pretty good deal), but it's hard to watch the show now knowing that the ending is a total let down. Here's hoping the manga has a better ending. Speaking of the manga, I might want to get started on my review for it soon.

Today I've posted my review for "Spider-Girl," a review that has been burning a hole on my computer for months now (since June to be exact). I've also finally updated my "Item of The Week" by taking the "Case Closed" DVD starter set away and replacing it with the XBox game "Fable." Several site visitors have been asking me what the deal is with all these long personal updates I've been doing. The reason I'm making these long personal updates is simple: I'm bored looking at an index page that has 100 updates that all have nothing to say except that a new review has been posted. I think that the main page should look a little bit more interesting then the way the site has been looking recently. One of my friends asked me why I didn't just get a blog, and I responded to him that I just simply didn't want a blog. After all, why get a blog when you've got your own index page on a website right? Besides, I've browsed those blogs before, and unless I know the person I can't say that those blogs interest me in the slightest bit. I figure that if you are visiting this site, then you at least value what I have to say since this website is made up of nothing but my opinions. And what opinions do I have? Well, it is my opinion that "Cellular" is a great movie and that everyone should see it (but won't). It's my opinion that "Fable" rocks. And it's my opinion that the "Case Closed" manga...sorry, but I'm going to save that last opinion for Friday. Hopefully you won't consider these somewhat pointless updates boring, I just like to write. Hmmm...I was going to share a project I was planning today, but maybe I'll hold off on that for another week. Anyway, enjoy the new review that's up.

Since I fixed my computer problems faster then I was exspecting, my review for Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma ½" is right on time. Aside from school I have one more distraction that will be taking away from my comic book time, however this new distraction I have is a GOOD distraction!  On Wensday I went to EB Games, and I picked up a game I had been waiting to come out for YEARS!  The game is called "Fable," it's for the XBox, and this is a game that had been anounced as coming out even before the XBox was released.  Being a hard-core gamer (as well as being a comic book nerd and anime otaku) I have to admitt that this has been a pretty lousy year for games.  There have been very few game releases (with the biggest game of them all, "Halo 2," still a couple months away from release), I haven't been playing much games because of the lack of good titles, and my game consoles feel neglected at this moment.  I was actually begining to fear that I was finally losing my interest in games after all these years.  Turns out my love of games is still very much intact (and I found out last week), its just that the quality of games hasn't been there recently.  When I left EB Games I noticed that Gamestop had a bunch of new game demo's up to play, and I decided to see if there was going to be life for my game systems after "Halo 2" came out.  Turns out there will be, in a game coming out for the Nintendo Gamecube called "Donky Kong Konga." I've been very critical of Nintendo ever since the N64 came out.

I strongly believe that using cartridges over CD's for N64 because of piracy fears hurt them deeply, I believe that they create too many sequels and not enough original games these days, I think they made a mistake by backing up that silly connectivity gimmick of theirs instead of the proven online gaming craze, and I do not believe that they will last much longer as a first party developer. However this "Donky Konga" game is actually a very good idea, and it's the kind of game where anyone of any age can pick up the game and play it. I don't believe it will be THE game of the year, but hopefully we'll see more games like "Donky Konga" and "Fable" next year. Of course, next year is also the year when the new wave of systems come out, so we'll see. Also this is going to be the last week I have the "Case Closed" DVD starter set up, so if there is anyone out there who still wants to pick it up, then you have a handy link next to you that you can buy it from. Oh and if you like what you see on the DVD, then PLEASE watch the show on Cartoon Network and force them to pick up the show for another season!

Due to a computer virus called "Search Miracle" taking hold of my computer, updates will be held off until I can clean out my computer. Just giving you all a heads up (and if someone here knows how to get rid of "Search Miracle" WITHOUT wiping out my computer I could use your help if you can give it me).

Since my schedule for life has been pretty hectic (okay, VERY hectic), I'm only going to promise everyone that I'll be able to complete one review per week for the time being. No, this does not mean that I'm never doing two reviews a week now, I just can't promise to get two reviews done a week (and three reviews a week are out of the question at this point). But I can promise one, so just keep in mind that you'll at least be able to read one new review a week (this week the review is for "Blankets"). Also has anyone been watching Dreamworks new animated sitcom "Father of The Pride" that has recently premiered on Tuesdays? I have, and right now I'm not sure what to think of the show. At times the show has some very clever dialog ("If these guys pull one more lame stunt I'm buying a gun on eBay and hiring someone with fingers to shoot it"), but the show also has all these sexual overtones that aren't needed, funny, and they certainly aren't inspirational. Ever since animated shows started pushing the envelope of what people expected to see in an animated series that airs on prime time TV, we have seen more shows that have such potential to be genuinely funny, but they fall flat on their faces because they just HAVE to add all these sexual overtones because people expect animation on prime time TV to shock them!

And if the show doesn't shock them? Well then the show might as well have aired on the WB network as part of the Kids WB Super Saturday Weekend block. It's things like this that make animation look more like a mockery then anything. I mean, come people, why do we have to load these cartoons with a bunch of adult oriented stuff that doesn't work, why can't they just make these shows (*gasp*) FUNNY?! Oh well, sooner or later TV is bound to get good again, all we have to do is wait until it does I guess. Also does anyone know what's up with Mangabits these days? I'm starting to wonder if they've deserted their site, as they haven't updated in over a month (not a good sign in my book). On a final note I want to express the fact that I am humored that the newspaper ad's for the new film "Paparazzi" are using quotes from the review over at Ain't It Cool News? No kidding. When I saw these ad's quoting that crappy website, the one thought that came to my head was "Oh my God. Is Ain't Cool News STILL around?!" When I look at that crappy site, all I see are poorly written reviews, people who suck up to the companies that sponser them, and the most outdated and ugly designed website ever created. Why someone hasn't given the HTML a much deserved overhaul is anybody's guess. In fact, this is the ONLY review that I ever found to be insightful and interesting to come from that site, otherwise though I'm not sure why people still go there. After re-visiting the site after all these years I want to promise to everyone that I will NEVER let my site become as terrible as AICN has become!

Sorry for not updating on Monday, but I've been extremely busy this week with school (that and seeing "Hero" in theaters, which is an EXCELLENT movie that you all should get up and go see after you read my new review). So without further ado, I give you the review for "Fruits Basket."
