For he will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all uour ways. - Psalm 91:10
Every Sunday morning the first thing I read in the paper is the comics. I'm sure this comes as no surprise to any of you. But you may be surprised to find out that I tend to be disappointed in the Sunday comics these days. "Garfield" hasn't been truly funny since Jim Davis stopped drawing the strip, "Peanuts" is stuck in reruns, "Cathy" is still being overzealous about her weight, "For Better or For Worse" may still one of the best comics in the papers these days, however that will be coming to an end in 2007 when Lynn Johnson retires and seeks the help she needs for her health problems she has. New comics coming into the papers aren't much better. "Helen, Sweetheart of The Internet" doesn't click with me (and I'm a big fan of the internet), "Rose Is Rose" isn't charming anymore (probably because the creator retired from writing the strip), and ever since George W. Bush won the 2004 election Aaron McGruder's "The Boondocks" has become the nastiest comic that is printed in newspapers today. So big laughs are hard to come by, great stories are non-existent, and now there are even comics that have hatred steaming from them. See my problem yet? The Sunday comics shouldn't be like this, they should be of some use to people, to make them laugh when they need a laugh, to tell a story they might want to read, and they certainly shouldn't be mean. So with all that said, I am pleased to report that there IS still a syndicated comic strip that is a joy to read, and it also just happens to be one of the best comics you may not know about! The comic I'm talking about is Guy Gilchrists "Your Angels Speak." If you have ever lost hope, if you have ever doubted yourself, if you have ever woke up in the morning and felt completely hopeless, then "Your Angels Speak" may just be the comic that could make a difference in your life. Unlike most syndicated comics "Your Angels Speak" does not have a main cast of characters, it does not have a continuing story, and it only contains one main theme (of which a handful of other little themes revolve around). That theme is "nothing is hopeless with God in your life," and while some people may frown upon that theme I can't think of a better theme for a comic strip about angels. Every strip has a beautiful drawing of an angel, and with that picture comes words of inspiration, words of hope, words of motivation, and scripture verses's from the Bible. To some people this may not sound like anything special, but those people may not realize how important these words and pictures may mean to people who are in need of hope. In fact, my own words cannot do justice to this series because there are really no words for this series that could do the content justice or properly describe it. Oh I suppose I could say this series is inspirational, that it gives hope to those who may have none, and that you can clearly see God's love pouring out of the paper with every strip you see, and while all that may be true, reading the comic and describing the comic produces two totally different reactions. On one hand I can describe what the comic is about, but in no way can my description make you feel what the comic is about. However one thing I CAN tell you what this comic is not is judgmental! Christians get a bad rep as being people who judge others and their lifestyles, and this comic shows everyone who a good 95% of Christians really are: People who are kind and loving and just want to help you. This comic does not lift up people who are Christians above everyone else and make people who aren't Christians feel under minded. No, this comic is all about us as HUMANS! Humans in general, whether they are Christian or not, are very flawed, and only through God can we make it through life and be forgiven. This comic will not go out of its way to point out flaws nor will it tell of terrible times that are coming. All this comic offers are words of wisdom and inspiration for those who are in need of these words. Heck, I'm a Christian and even I was touched and helped by the Angels and their words. As mentioned before all these words come with pictures of angels drawn, and if the words don't touch your heart, then the words combined with the beautiful pictures will. In a simple phrase, these drawings are some of the best drawings you'll find in the newspapers these days. The Angels are all drawn lovely, very human like, and even though some of them are drawn so that they are fragile and weak, they are always drawn so that you can see that there is hope for them. Absolutely beautiful. These angels would make great posters to hang on anybodies wall. So considering that this comic is all about reaching out to people and giving them words of hope you would think that more newspapers would be willing to pick it up. Unfortunately that is not the case. Many of the big wigs who run newspapers (my own paper included) feels that this comic serves no purpose being in their papers, and that the word of God and words for people who have lost hope have no business being in the funny pages. So I guess it's alright for "Boondocks" to make a joke about Iragi suicide bombers who become officers because they flunked "Suicide School" yet a comic that actually offers something worth reading and words that could change someone's life is taboo? In my eyes that is just wrong, as anyone in the world could read this comic and walk away impacted. From the depressed to the happy, to the angered to the saddened, to the people with all the hope in the world to the people who have no hope left, this comic has words for them that could change their lives and maybe just even help them make it through the day. Please do yourself a favor and go to www.yourangelsspeak.com for more information about the Angels and to even read some of the comics themselves. If you don't, then simply put, you're missing out on one of the best comic strips in production today. Seeing as how the Angels have spoken to my heart more then once in my life, I can not think of any better thank you then to give this series my highest recommendation! Here's hoping the Angels and God's word speak to your heart too. - -Review By Kevin T. Rodriguez- - |
